As a local I have always wanted to spend the weekend at Komasket, but it wasn't until this past year that we took the plunge as a family. We have four kids who at the time were 11, 10, 4 and 2. We camped in the family camp ground near the 'KIDZ ZONE'. This was the highlight of our summer, beating out a trip to Alberta to visit the Calgary Zoo and Drumheller. The atmosphere was completely family friendly and the music was AMAZING!! We will definitely be making it an annula family trip and are already talking about it. We can't wait and encourage everyone to give it a try!

luv-hate...yes.
As for your last question...hard one. I think if the home has good bones, then save the landfill and be creative with what you have. Our home really did lose all of its character so for us, it wasn't necessarily about restoring character, but enjoying the space and what it had to offer.

It also depends on your budget. The bigger, the more creative. The smaller, actually...the more creative. Works both ways. Sorry not much help.

We spoke to several contractors - one who told us to tear down, others who questioned, "why would you?" In the end, we went with our gut.

I wish I hadn't needed to work during some of our major construction and had spent more time seeing the process....I would have questioned more.
Regardless of how big or small the budget is - make sure to be very clear with your contractor that you want weekly updates. A good, transparent and clear form of communication should get you out of any trouble.

Deep breaths and flexibility. I would suggest (if possible) to not live in the home you are renovating. We were fortunate to live downtown during the process. Dust sucks.

In the end, I feel much better keeping this house erect. Homes are not BUILT like this anymore. I'd take solid fir beams compared to todays 2x4s -which-aren't-really-2x4s- any day.

Thx for reading Barrie. I'm planning to do more around Vancouver Heritage Buildings in my Scavenger Hunt...
